Mars Petcare has issued an urgent recall of some packs of Pedigree and Chappie dry dog food because they may contain overly high levels of vitamin D.
If dogs consum too much vitamin D over a sustained period it can result in symptoms including lethargy, stiffness, vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling and weight loss.
In very high levels it can even lead to serious issues such as renal dysfunction.
“The recall is being launched due to a raw material used in this production not meeting our high quality and food safety standards and is outside specification,” the company said in its recall notice.
“Mars Petcare asks consumers who have purchased the affected products not to feed it to their dog and to contact Mars Petcare Customer Service.”
